Some basics about the trip to Peru June 14, 2009

Well, since we’re leaving in about 30 days, I figure it’s time to write about what we’re generally going to be doing while in Peru. The team, about six girls and two guys, are going to be flying into Lima July 17th from different parts of the country. I will be flying with Dorothy and Aliece, which is awesome. When we get to Lima, we’ll stay a day for orientation. Then we’ll fly to Iquitos!

Iquitos is the only city in the world that you can’t get to by road. You have to take a boat or fly to it. It’s on the very eastern edge of Peru, next to the Amazon river. We’ll be making different trips out to the jungle from Iquitos for a few days each. When we get to the villages in the jungle we’ll share bible stories and try to interact with the people of the villages.

I don’t have all the details, and even when looking at the details I do have, it’s hard to tell at this point what will end up being the good parts or the bad parts. I do have some praises to share, though.

  • I got my jungle hammock yesterday, with mosquito netting and a rain tarp. Haven’t put it up yet, but I’m pretty excited.
  • Turns out I’ve gotten a lot of my vaccinations, so I think I’m only looking at possibly one shot. I can do it!
  • My dad said he’d help me with my support if I did a various list of chores around the house. One of them is “design a bridge and build it,” so maybe this is more of a prayer request, haha.

I also have some prayer requests:

  • Pray that I would be really faithful in doing my devotions and that I would have an increasingly compassionate heart over the next month.
  • Pray that I would be able to memorize the different stories I am going to be assigned.
  • The missionaries, Jeremy and Crystal Nelson, just had a baby, and they are moving into their new house in Iquitos, and they are having trouble getting internet hooked up. Please pray that they would be able to get that hooked up because it would be so much more convenient for them.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate your interest!
